OFA Seniors Learn from St. Lawrence County Board of Elections Personnel
On March 19, 2015 OFA senior class members heard a presentation by the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections personnel: Seth Belt, Deputy Democratic Commissioner; Gordon Ward, Democratic Data Management Technician; and Nicole Maxner - Republican Deputy Commissioner. This presentation was the culmination of our spring voter registration drive and provided the students with an understanding of how to utilize the scannable voting machines.  The presenters were able to discuss their role in elections with the students as well as field questions and explain the process of absentee balloting. The students were instructed on how to file for absentee ballots and military absentee ballots.  All classes were encouraged to vote in elections due to the recent number of close elections, i.e. the last three Ogdensburg Mayoral races which were decided by the absentees.  The 116th Assembly District race between incumbent Assembly women Addie J. Russell (D-Theresa) and challenger John Byrne (R-Cape Vincent) from 2014 was discussed.  This election's close nature and also the process of counting absentee ballots in that high stakes pressure filled environment was explained to the students.
